Reaping the Harvest of Volunteerism

Employees from the Republic Cement Head Office spent the day with parent-volunteers, the principal and teachers of Timoteo Policarpio Memorial Elementary School at the Kusina ng Kalinga kitchen preparing nutritious meals for almost 2,000 schoolchildren from Kindergarten to Grade 3. The kids will benefit for the entire school-year 2018-2019 from the Republic Cement-supported Kusina ng Kalinga, in partnership with Gawad Kalinga.

Republic volunteers packed the meals and transported them to Apugan Elementary School, where over 250 students gratefully welcomed the team and received their meals.

After distributing the meals, the volunteers continued their work transferring vegetable seedlings from Republic’s plant nursery to recycled plastic containers for the school’s vegetable garden. They also visited the rainwater catchment system that Republic installed in the school to ensure that there is adequate water supply for the garden, while conserving the school’s resources. These activities are all part of Republic Cement’s “Project Harvest” which aims to improve students’ access to healthy ingredients used to prepare nutritious meals.

At the end of the long but fulfilling and remarkable day of service for others, the employees of Republic Cement understood even more what it means to build a stronger Republic starting with the children.
